Queensland Government announces $6.3m for Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Grant Scheme 

Youngcare welcomes the Queensland Government’s announcement of $6.3 million in new funding to extend the Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Grant Scheme, improving access to essential transport for Queenslanders living with physical disabilities.  

The Grant will help replace and maintain at least 115 ageing wheelchair-accessible taxis across the state. The Government is also doubling the incentive paid to taxi drivers who transport passengers using wheelchairs on Christmas Day. 

The Crisafulli Government’s action to strengthen accessible transport options across Queensland addresses a critical need in the disability community. Poor transport access has been linked to lower wellbeing, social isolation and reduced opportunities for people living with disability. 

Our residents have reported instances where they have been left on the side of the road, waited hours for taxis, or avoided leaving home altogether for lack of accessible transport options.  

Youngcare CEO Clare Stewart said the investment will make a real difference to the everyday lives of people living with significant physical disabilities. 

“Access to reliable, wheelchair-accessible transport remains a significant barrier to mobility for many people in the disability community,” Mrs Stewart said.  

“Transport is about freedom of movement, something many of us often take for granted. It’s fundamental to independence and connecting people to work, healthcare, social activities and their community. 

“This investment supports what Youngcare stands for: the opportunities we all deserve to live with dignity, independence and choice.”  

With applications now open for the grant scheme, Youngcare encourages eligible taxi operators to apply and help Queenslanders with disability access safe, reliable and accessible transport when they need it.
