CEO message
The new season is an exciting time for Youngcare as we start to focus on bringing our latest apartments at Albany Creek, Brisbane to life in partnership with MS Queensland. This innovative new development will provide eight young Aussies with high care needs with their own two-bedroom apartments, where they can live independently with age appropriate, dignified care.
In this edition of Y News we launch two new regular sections – ‘Youngcare Loves’, which profiles an amazing Youngcare supporter and an ‘Out and About’ photo gallery to share some of our exciting activities.
The past few months have been busy for the Youngcare grants team, with Home Soon Grants awarded to two very deserving young Aussies who can now move to more age-appropriate accommodation. It’s a great result for these young people and their families and we look forward to helping more young Aussies than ever leave aged care this year.
We also hosted a thought provoking event in Sydney which brought together influential thinkers and decision makers at the inaugural Conversations on the Lawn. A very inspiring evening which developed fresh ideas and new insights to deliver on our vision of a future where no young Australian has to wake up in aged care.
On the policy front, Youngcare continues to advocate for young people with high care needs through our submissions to state and federal government. In the past few months we have provided feedback on the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Framework; the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS) implementation model and consulted with the Department of Housing and Public Works on the long term future of housing in Queensland.
As you read this, I’ll be on the 2016 Youngcare Simpson Desert Challenge with 15 intrepid trekkers. The team have been giving their absolute all in training and with their fundraising, to prepare for what will be a tough experience. Whilst we know we can return home to our families and friends after eight days of monotony and little choice in how we spend our time, there are still 7,000 young Aussies living in aged care facing greater challenges each day, indefinitely.
Thank you to you, our friends and supporters, for joining us on this journey as we band together to solve this national issue.
Onwards and upwards,
Sam
P.S. To see all the trek action check our website and Facebook page for regular updates. And watch out for the Channel Nine documentary ‘8 Days in the Desert’ airing on 28 May 2016 (Queensland) and 29 May 2016 (all other states) which follows our trekking team through their amazing journey. #SDC2016 #8DaysintheDesert
