Volunteer spotlight — Teresa
As a Youngcare volunteer Teresa has given many hours helping out in the office and at various events, and her dedication to the cause inspires us all.
“Having moved to Brisbane from the UK after a year of whirlwind adventures in South East Asia, I was looking for a way to get involved in my local community, meet some new people, gain some work experience within Australia and to take part in something positive and rewarding.
From the moment I got in touch with Youngcare, I was treated with warmth, kindness and a very real sense of gratitude. The team are very passionate about what they do, and this quickly rubbed off on me! The work that they do: helping young people with high care needs to live young lives, and not in aged care – wasn’t something I had been exposed to or heard of before, but the more I learnt about it, the more committed I became to the small part I could play in the organisation.
Youngcare events are always full of energy and fun – from Budgie Bolt (where I went from not knowing what “budgie-smugglers” were to being all too familiar with them over the course of a very entertaining few hours!) to selling pins at Doomben Races (whilst also taking in the fantastic atmosphere and getting a taste for Australian race day fashion) and selling 50-50 tickets at my first ever Brisbane Broncos game.”
“After moving across the globe to a city full of strangers, I have found the sense of community I was looking for through my time as a Youngcare volunteer. I would highly recommend it to others looking to give back and have some fun.”
