News Story: Grant helps make a change

Grant helps make a change

The Advocate, Tasmania

WEST Ulverstone local and 36-year-old multiple sclerosis sufferer Davida has been able to make improvements to her mobility with the help of Youngcare and a local business. Youngcare is a not-forprofit organisation spearheading change for young people with high care needs.

For Davida, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 21, depending on her elderly mother has been a reality up until recently. The mother of a young boy lives at home with her son and 74-year-old mother, who also performs the duties of carer. After a severe attack in 2016, navigating the stairs in her home became impossible.

At times, she would slide down the stairs on her bottom with her 74 year old mother holding her feet. Donations recently announced by Australian company Betta Home Living, which will see $100,000 delivered to Youngcare, will help Davida improve her ability to move and livelihood.

Youngcare CEO, Anthony Ryan said the issues facing young people with high care needs and their families are both broad and complex.

“Most people believe that if they acquire a severe injury and require 24 hour care, they will be placed into appropriate housing, or they have simply not considered the implications,” he said.

Mr Ryan talked of the ‘reality’ of what it is like for a person with high care needs.

“The reality is, if you require full time care and don’t have the facilities at home, often your only option is institutionalised housing – like aged care or long term health facilities. Medical costs, equipment and care can place a huge financial strain on families, and unfortunately government schemes can only cover so much,” he explained.

Mr Ryan said the NDIS is “paving the way” for change in the disability space. “It is a wonderful step in the right direction, however there are still gaps in funding and limited housing options for young people with high care needs.”

Youngcare fills these gaps with our grants programs, provides independence and choice through our premium high care housing and our dedicated Youngcare Connect team provide vital advice and support through a free national support line.
