Need to Know: Royal Commission

What you need to know about The Royal Commission so far:

The Royal Commission into the Quality and Safety of Aged Care began with a preliminary hearing in Adelaide last Friday. With a specific focus outlined in the terms of reference on younger people with disabilities living in aged care facilities, Youngcare will be following this Royal Commission very closely.

Here’s what you need to know so far:

The Honourable Richard Tracey AM RFD QC and Ms Lynelle Briggs AO have been appointed as Royal Commissioners. On Friday 18th, the Commissioners heard their first reports at the Adelaide inquiry. Throughout the process of the Royal Commission, representatives will travel around the country, hearing testimonies from victims, family members and Aged Care workers whilst engaging community to visit institutions.

Public submissions are now open for interested members of the public to share their stories with the Royal Commission through an online form on the website.

If you:

Currently live in aged care or
Have a family member who currently lives in aged care
Have lived in a nursing home in the last 5 years

Then Youngcare encourages you to submit your stories and #createchange for young people with disabilities. By providing this information, we can continue to assist young people with high care needs to live the young lives they deserve, with age-appropriate, dignified care.

To help with writing your submission, please refer to the following questions.

  • What is the quality of the aged care services delivered by the provider to you or someone you know? Do you consider the care services provided were substandard? If so, why? Please provide as much detail as you can about any specific incidents or events which occurred.
  • What are the challenges and how can the provider, or Australia generally, better deliver aged care services to people with disabilities and what are your primary concerns?
  • What changes would you like the Royal Commission to recommend?

To complete your submission, please visit the Royal Commission website. If you have any further queries or if you are happy to share your story with the Youngcare team pending further Royal  Commissions into the disability sector please email [email protected]
