This year’s Queensland Music Awards (QMAs) will feature an inaugural accessibility award to recognise live music venues in Queensland that have made significant efforts to provide accessibility to people with disability. The award promotes the importance of making live music events accessible to everyone and celebrates the incredible work of many venues throughout Queensland that are taking fundamental steps to ensure accessibility.
Youngcare is working hard and passionately advocating for a more accessible and inclusive Australia for people of all abilities, and we’re excited to see the QMAs recognise the efforts of venues making notable progress. We can’t wait to see more venues get on board!
This year’s award is possible thanks to disability support provider Choice, Passion, Life (CPL). CPL Chief Experience Officer, Julie Byth, highlighted the difficulties people with disability still face accessing live music, and said live music should be for everyone.
“As well as looking at venues that provide the obligatory physical access, we’re really looking for venues that make deliberate efforts to be inclusive,” Julie said.
“That might be through social accessibility such as Auslan interpreters and sensory considerations, or programming performers with disability.
“By showing and recognising what’s possible, we hope to spur more venues to begin thinking about and planning for inclusion.”
