As a person lucky enough to have one paid day of volunteer leave a year, I wanted to make sure I used my leave on a worthy cause – and there is no doubt in my mind that Youngcare is worthy cause. While all charities are doing good work, Youngcare fills a gap that not many people know exists and that sorely needs funding. They give young Australian’s with high care needs the quality of life and independence that myself, and many other people take for granted. I remember hearing about them when I was in high school and imagining having to live in an aged care facility at a young age – this was when I knew it was a cause I would love to help with.
In my time volunteering with Youngcare I have raised funds, rattled tins, assisted in charity auctions, sold raffle tickets at sporting events, and written more personalised thank you notes than my cramped hand appreciated. While it might sound like a lot, volunteering with Youngcare allows me to meet some amazing people from all walks of life and gives me a sense of community that really adds to my self-worth. I can’t pick a favourite volunteering moment because they are all so great in their own way – try something out and see for yourself! As someone who works full time I appreciate a charity that has opportunities outside of the usual 9 to 5, and the entire team at Youngcare always make sure us Vollies know how much we are appreciated.
I have continued to give my time to Youngcare because not only do they look after their volunteers and donors, but most importantly they really care for their recipients. The most rewarding part of helping with Youngcare is seeing a Youngcare recipient at a Bronco’s game, giving a hilarious speech at an event, or hearing how the residents for one of the houses are going. I can’t wait to see the growth of Youngcare, and take great pride in being associated with such a great organisation.
