As told by Julia, Youngcare resident…
As a nation we love to come together and celebrate. We put aside special dates and days, special events and occasions and we party. One such occasion occurred, a celebration of a ten year anniversary of the Youngcare Apartments located at Sinnamon Park, within Brisbane’s Western Suburbs, celebrated ten years of being in operation. People gathered, speeches were made and the setting was set.
Celebrating the goodness of people. Celebrating the advent of change. Yes, we came together and we partied.
It is a fine example of a community of people coming together to create, to rally and to advocate for change
An area of great concern came to light when a beautiful, young woman, suffering with the debilitating disease of Multiple Sclerosis needed ongoing care. Her dedicated and loving husband was overwhelmed with the ongoing and ever increasing care required. Desperately looking for suitable accommodation he was confronted time and time again with the only option available – Aged Care Facilities.
This option, in his mind, was a totally unacceptable one and it needed to change.
So began the story of Youngcare. A story of epic proportions which brought together an enormous community of people from all walks of life. The tremendous support and backing of so many people saw the opening and the realisation of the Youngcare Apartments on December 7th, 2007. An enormous step had been taken, an enormous change was taking place.Young people, living with a disability, being housed in an age appropriate environment had became a reality.
Thank you to all involved in this pioneering project and all current supporters for the many more High Care Housing developments to come.
